NewsletterThe April 2009 edition of the Newsletter has now been published. Annual General MeetingThe Thames Homeless Project 2009 Annual General Meeting was held on Tuesday, 12 May 2009. The trustees provided a report of the years activities which is summarised below: During 2009 THP continued supporting the Thames Haven hostel in Walton-On –Thames. The hostel is one of THP’s big achievements and THP intended to continue the financial commitment by keeping financial reserves for a rainy day. Angela emphasised the good work that was done in the hostel. THP continues to work closely with other professionals. This year THP was able to make grants to Elmbridge, Runnymede and Spelthorne Rentstarts, and to the York Road Project. Angela acknowledged that representatives from these organisations were at the AGM tonight and thanked them for coming. THP's has helped many individuals in the past year not only financial and through the purchase of furniture and food but also by popping round to see people and taking them some well needed provisions and ‘bits and pieces’. An example of this was giving a man a second hand frying pan – he was so excited that he would be able to cook himself a fry-up.Angela acknowledged the huge amount of work that Peter Bennett, Secretary and Trustee for THP had done over the past year. Peter did a lot of work supporting people; he did nearly 200 miles visiting people in 2008. Peter did so much behind the scenes; organising the Christmas hampers, running the storage garage, organising goods to be delivered, temporary treasurer and being Secretary. Angela couldn’t emphasise enough about the valuable work that Peter has done. With regret the meeting was informed that Peter Bennett was to stand down as Trustee as of today’s AGM. THP is staffed and run by volunteers and is constantly in search of helpers and supporters. Angela emphasised to the meeting that someone doesn’t need to be a Trustee to do this kind of work. People can become involved with THP in many way occasional helpers to man stalls at events, become 100 Club members, and deliver provisions to people and to help with fundraising amongst other things.
Angela announced that a new Trustee, Nick Oakes had put himself forward for nomination along with Dave Paterson the acting Treasurer since November. On a personal note Angela announced that she would be standing down at this AGM as Chair and Trustee. Angela assumed the position of Chair when Barbara Mudd (founder of THP) handed it over to her. Angela is proud of THP’s achievements in for filling its mission to alleviate homelessness but also in the way THP has developed in areas such the new website. Angela was confident that the current Trustees were well placed to tackle the new challenges ahead like increasing fundraising during 2009/10 to meet the ever growing demand for the services THP provide. Angela's successor would be chosen at the next Trustees meeting which will be chaired by Howard Springett, Angela closed with thanks to Father John for allowing us to use the hall, Joan for organising the raffle, to all THP supporters both those at the AGM and those not present. Finally, thanks to the Trustees and especially to Peter and to Dave our new Treasurer. The meeting was closed by a presentations from: Catherine Burns from East to West.
